It's not every day that you cram a Hong Kong pop diva, African drummers and fashion models into a 600-square-foot shop in Sha Tin, but this is what Converse did at its New Town Plaza shop to launch the Red Project limited-edition shoe.
The sneaker is a pet project of U2's Bono and 50 per cent of all proceeds will go towards fighting tuberculosis, malaria and Aids in Africa. On Thursday, singer Denise Ho Wan-sze was the celebrity spokeswoman preaching the righteous message.
"The Aids problem is not an African problem - the whole world is affected by it," she said. "Sex education is not so great in Hong Kong. We should change the way educators talk to students about sex. I have had friends who've been careless and gotten pregnant and had to have abortions. If I've seen people with this problem, I'm sure everyone has also."
Okay, but isn't the issue Aids, not unwanted pregnancy?
Social consciousness is not exactly a speciality of pop idols. Also, we know the shoes-for-Africa thing is a good cause and all, but did we really need stereotypical drumming Africans at the event?
As for the little African girl at the event representing all the children the aid will help - she's actually half-Filipino, born in Hong Kong and speaks Cantonese.
